On Sunday, June 30, we will inaugurate “Las Piedras Hablan,” an exhibition of large-format sculptures by Josep Canals at the Castle of Foixà. The combination of the sculptures with the surroundings is simply spectacular. The castle, a construction that began in the second half of the 13th century with subsequent renovations, is situated on a hill, a watchtower with some of the most privileged views of the Empordà plain, making it an incomparable setting for such an exhibition. This allows us to even talk about a triple exhibition: the castle, the landscapes, and the exhibited sculptures.
Josep Canals, a master in stonework, presents a selection of nearly twenty pieces, almost all of them large-scale. The proposal includes works from the last thirty years of his craft, always starting from the concept of the Möbius strip, a surface with only one face and edge, which is always the initial excuse to work with different materials such as marble, stone, iron, or fiber.
Josep arrived in Empordà over forty years ago with Marcel Martí, with whom he collaborated on many works. He lives and works in Casavells, in the company of fellow sculptor Núria Efe. This summer, he will be one of the prominent figures in the area, and we will be able to enjoy his works at the Castle of Foixà, at Tramuntana Art in Port de la Selva, at the “Entre obras” exhibition in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, at the sculptural ensemble at the Molí del Mig Hotel in Torroella de Montgrí, and at the Enlace Arte gallery in Serra de Daró.
